ABSTRACT

Leiomyoma is a type of benign smooth muscle neoplasm that is a common neoplasm of the uterus and gastrointestinal tract but rarely affects the head and neck region and is especially unlikely to affect the oral cavity. The diagnosis of leiomyoma is mainly determined by histopathological studies due to variation in its clinical appearance and symptoms. In the present paper we report two rare cases of gingival angioleiomyoma in the posterior maxilla and mandible. After total excision, hematoxylin-eosin and smooth muscle actin staining confirmed the diagnosis of angioleimyoma.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objective: Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men. The localized disease often responds to conventional therapies like androgen ablation via castration and/or administration of chemical inhibitors but advanced disease resistant to any curative therapies is still challenge for investigators. There are increasing efforts to enhance the possibility of finding positive and sensitive immune markers for diagnosing and treating prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression patterns of AMACR and iNOS in prostate adenocarcinomas with different histopathologic grade


Methodology: We applied immunohistochemical markers; AMACR and iNOS. Formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues of 64 prostate needle biopsy specimens diagnosed as prostate adenocarcinoma between 2005-2010 years were included in the study


Results: AMACR expression were found in 58 [90.6%] and iNOS expression in 54 [84.4%] of 64 prostate adenocarcinomas. No significant relationship of AMACR and iNOS was obtained [p > 0.05]. There was no significant correlation of histopathologic grade of the tumors with AMACR and iNOS expression [p > 0.05]


Conclusions: The expression of AMACR and iNOS might be important diagnostic immune markers for prostate adenocarcinomas especially in needle biopsies where the quantity and quality of tissue are limited

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis, which may involve most organs, is still a major health problem in developing countries. Despite a high and increasing frequency of tuberculosis, cutaneous tuberculosis [CT] is an uncommon form. CT may develop due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, and the Bacille Calmette-Guerin [BCG]. CT may have various clinical forms. The most frequent form of CT is lupus vulgaris [LV]. LV originates from inactive tuberculosis focus in the body and spreads by hematogenous or lymphatic way and by direct or exogenous inoculation. A diagnosis of LV was made based on clinical and histopathological examination. The lesions regressed after treatment with 3 antituberculous drugs. CT must be considered in cases with chronic skin lesions because tuberculosis prevalence is high in our country. Early diagnosis and treatment of patients with CT is extremely important in order to prevent complications. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the youngest CT affecting case

ABSTRACT

We reviewed cases of primary colorectal adenocarcinoma to document synchronous colon and rectum adenocarcinoma SCRC. In a retrospective setting, 764 cases underwent surgical resection for primary colorectal adenocarcinoma and referred to the Department of Surgical Pathology, Uludag University, Medical Faculty for diagnoses between 1997 and 2006, were reviewed. Tumor site, depth of invasion, coexistence of adenoma, distance between these multiple primary tumors, degree of p53 expression, and p53 expression pattern indicating polyclonal or monoclonal origins were noted in order to establish a possible effect on prognosis. There were 28 cases with SCRC of colon and rectum. Nine cases were female, 19 cases were male female to male ratio was 1:2. Most of the cases were within the 5th and the 6th decades. There were statistically significant relationships between p53 expression and differentiation status p=0.001, and invasion depth p=0.03. Forty of 62 colorectal carcinomas showed immunohistochemical positivity for p53. Six cases showed a discordant pattern of p53 mutation among individual lesions indicating polyclonal origin. Synchronous colon and rectum adenocarcinoma is not rare. The incidence is 3.6% in our series. We believe that further studies with larger series are needed for p53 to prove useful in predicting prognosis of SCRCs and assessing the polyclonal origin of SCRC at a genetic level
